ith so many sci-fi movies being announced, our thirst for technological progress will never be quenched. From the Batmans, to the Ironmans, to the G. I. Joes, the gadgets they have been using are simply mesmerizing. And this hasn’t just happened. Right since the time when Star Trek and Back to the Future were released, these movies presented an escape route from the real world to us dreamers. Here’s a light read on the movie technology we’d love to see commercialized in real life…
Nike MAG Back to the future shoes
The cult classic from the ‘80s had Marty McFly flaunt a whole new level of cool with his auto fit Nike MAG shoes. The movie was produced by the visionary Steven Spielberg and gave kids and adults alike a chance to dream and peek into the future. Here’s how the shoes worked. When you put your foot in them, the laces would automatically tighten and the shoes would basically fit around your foot.
Self strappin' shoes!
Coming back to the present, if we could see something like that in our oh-so-busy lives, we’d definitely be the first ones to purchase the shoes. They could have an internal padding that could inflate if you have skinny feet, so that one size fits all. Wear them when it rains, wear them when it’s sunny, wear them in your bed; because if these shoes come true, we’ll all be living the good life again!
Nike have already got a limited edition Back to the future shoes as part of their ‘It’s about time’ collection but hey, besides the cool lights we also want self lacing, self drying shoes that automatically strap onto our feet! Nothing more. Yes, it’s about time.
The BatPod!
BatPod and Tron Bike (The Light Cycle)
Arguably two of the coolest looking bikes ever designed, BatPod and Tron Bike are very much in existence. The only problem? They’re just prototypes with pretty much no chance that they will ever be sold commercially (as of now). To think about it, these bikes don’t really fly or do anything out of the ordinary (and hence don’t break any rules), then why not have a few limited edition ones out! Minus the ammunition, obviously.
For those living inside a box, the BatPod is Batman’s bike and it is his go-to machine if he wants to chill around the streets of BatLand Gotham City while fighting a criminal or two. It would come out of the Bat Mobile, but we’re okay if that’s not possible. No worries, whatsoever. Just give us the BatPod and we’ll ride the streets like never before!
Sexy...the bike!
The Tron Bike was used in the movie Tron in a couple of brilliant action sequences. It became so popular that a number of arcade games were launched after the movie as well. This bike from the future is one of the sexiest looking bikes around and while some may have qualms about how to turn using this bike or how their backs would feel while riding this, we’re looking at the bigger picture here. Some super awesome designing coupled with an absolute futuristic look makes us wish it becomes commercially available in the near future.
Holographic touch screen Whoever has seen Tom Cruise in Minority Report will know what we’re talking about out here. Holographic touchscreens feature high on our wish list as they’re not only cool, but further bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual world. Finally you can touch and feel objects and manoeuvre them using your hands. Imagine a holographic touchscreen display on your smartphone, tablet, table, TV or anywhere. We’ve got numerous displays around us, the only thing now left is to make them holographic and touch enabled! Samsung, listening? With Microsoft’s Holodeck and Intels touchscreen display, this will soon be a part of our everyday lives. We’re pretty sure holographic touch screen displays are only a matter of time. And when you do encounter them in the near future, remember, you heard it here first! AR Windscreen HUD While it may not be the safest thing to have a display on your windscreen (for obvious reasons), there are a lot of reasons how an assisted system would help. Let us explain. Foggy conditions ahead? The sides of the road light up on your screen in augmented reality awesomeness. Road sign not visible? Assisted GPS required? Want to know your vehicle speed? With an augmented reality display on your windscreen, you will no longer have to get your eyes off the screen. And when not required, a simple button will make it disappear. Yes, it’s that easy. That may be a bit too much, maybe Also, what’s important to note is that the technology has been in experimentation for quite a while. Top car manufacturers in the world including GM, Mercedes Benz and BMW have already been testing HUDs on their windscreen. The only question remains is that how long will it be before it gets commercialized? Never take your eyes off the road now G.I. Joe Exo suit G.I. Joes became extremely popular in the ‘90s for their distinct characters and vast arsenal of arms, ammunition and machines. In their last movie, we did see the full utilization of the GiJoe Exo suits and boy, were we impressed. The Exo suit wraps itself to the user’s body and gives him a performance, speed and power boost. More agility, precision, indestructibility is just the start. The suit has its own heads up display which looks cooler than any project by Google on AR displays (Read: Project Glasses), but the only difference is that the Exo suit is far from reality, at the moment. In the movie, they evade bullets, fly momentarily and have an amazing level of flexibility – much like all your favourite super heroes bundled up into one suit – what more could one ask for! All that is required is that somebody brings it into existence and we will happily trod on our way to human and world domination. Go Joe! Superhuman abilities with the Exo suit Well, that was our wish list for now. Replicators, Teleportation, Fountain of Youth, Flying Cars, Free Energy, Hydrogen fuel technology, Hotels on the moon, what technology would you like to see in the near future?
