While Flipboard previously was only available for the iPad, not only has the app been brought over to the iPhone, but it has also gotten a complete overhaul from its initial design and function. When Flipboard was first out, you could save nine publications to the app's homescreen and now, Flipboard is basically a social magazine. The app collects data from your Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Flickr and other social networks, so you can view content from them within the app itself. You will also be able to read articles from niche blogs to publications. Perhaps the biggest draw to Flipboard is the feature called "Cover Stories" where news stories that are most relevant to you reside.

2. Zite - Free

Flipboard competitor Zite, is also a beautiful way of reading news. Zite describes itself as the Pandora of reading. The application takes your preferences into account and provides you articles that it thinks you would be interested in. The more you use the app and the more feedback you give it, the more the app will learn your tastes. News is available through a variety of topics like Technology, World News and Business, but you can even create your own categories, like Ocean News, Scuba News and Chocolates. One drawback to Zite is local news is a little lacking. Smaller news sources from various countries are clearly missing or there is too little. For your morning news fix, however, Zite is the way to go.

3. CNN Mobile - Free

If you're someone who likes your news spoken to you, then CNN Mobile has built its app around providing video content to its users. There are two versions of the app, a U.S version and an international version. Both apps offer live video coverage of events and video clips as well as breaking news alerts on your device's homescreen. You can also record and submit video and photo iReports directly from your phone. A handy feature to have when the government's taken social networking sites down, but you still have a story to tell.

Pulse is a beautifully designed news gathering app, which provides articles from a good variety of sources. Almost like Flipboard, on the homescreen of the app, you can select, which publications you would like to see articles from and then in the various categories, like Tech, Design and Fashion, you will have access to articles from the large variety of sources that Pulse offers. The font and layout of the articles is beautiful and you can even do a local search to see what's relevant to you in the area you live

The Associated Press has a pretty neat iOS app, which not only presents news by title, but also by photos and videos. On both the photos and videos pages, you'll see the various news categories like World News, Sports and Top News. The photos are nice and big and can be shared with the social networks. The AP also offers a good variety of local news sources, so you'll be able to get the stories that directly affect you.

Zinio is a magazine app for the iPhone (and iPad) that offers you access to some of the world's biggest magazines like Rolling Stone, Elle and more. You can download articles to your phone so you can read them when you're not online. You can also buy single issues of magazines or subscribe to magazines from around the world. The app provides you with the option to view articles in full colour, high fidelity mode or in enhanced text mode.

While Stumbleupon isn't inherently a news based app, it provides a pretty nifty way of finding news for you - almost completely at random. While most other news apps present you with news in a very organized manner, you don't know what you will get with Stumbleupon.
