Whether it's breaking news or in-depth features, reading on the go is the way to go. While news is widely available across the social networks, those articles have to come from somewhere. Here are our ten favourite news applications for your iPhone to help you get the articles that matter to you, as well as some bonus features.
1. Flipboard - Free
1. Flipboard - Free
Flipboard for iPhone
The juggernaut of them all. While Flipboard previously was only available for the iPad, not only has the app been brought over to the iPhone, but it has also gotten a complete overhaul from its initial design and function. When Flipboard was first out, you could save nine publications to the app's homescreen and now, Flipboard is basically a social magazine. The app collects data from your Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Flickr and other social networks, so you can view content from them within the app itself. You will also be able to read articles from niche blogs to publications. Perhaps the biggest draw to Flipboard is the feature called "Cover Stories" where news stories that are most relevant to you reside.
2. Zite - Free
Zite for iPhone
Flipboard competitor Zite, is also a beautiful way of reading news. Zite describes itself as the Pandora of reading. The application takes your preferences into account and provides you articles that it thinks you would be interested in. The more you use the app and the more feedback you give it, the more the app will learn your tastes. News is available through a variety of topics like Technology, World News and Business, but you can even create your own categories, like Ocean News, Scuba News and Chocolates. One drawback to Zite is local news is a little lacking. Smaller news sources from various countries are clearly missing or there is too little. For your morning news fix, however, Zite is the way to go.
3. CNN Mobile - Free
CNN Mobile for iPhone (International edition)
If you're someone who likes your news spoken to you, then CNN Mobile has built its app around providing video content to its users. There are two versions of the app, a U.S version and an international version. Both apps offer live video coverage of events and video clips as well as breaking news alerts on your device's homescreen. You can also record and submit video and photo iReports directly from your phone. A handy feature to have when the government's taken social networking sites down, but you still have a story to tell.
4. Breaking News - Free
Breaking News for iPhone
The Breaking News app for the iPhone provides you with the latest breaking reports from news sources around the world. The app allows instant push alerts for the biggest stories and you can also set a "quiet time" to avoid receiving alerts for when you're asleep or are in a meeting. This app is sold by MSNBC Interactive News and is designed for the user who needs to know what's going on in the world at all times.
5. Pulse - Free
Pulse for iPhone
Pulse is a beautifully designed news gathering app, which provides articles from a good variety of sources. Almost like Flipboard, on the homescreen of the app, you can select, which publications you would like to see articles from and then in the various categories, like Tech, Design and Fashion, you will have access to articles from the large variety of sources that Pulse offers. The font and layout of the articles is beautiful and you can even do a local search to see what's relevant to you in the area you live
6. AP Mobile - Free
AP Mobile for iPhone
The Associated Press has a pretty neat iOS app, which not only presents news by title, but also by photos and videos. On both the photos and videos pages, you'll see the various news categories like World News, Sports and Top News. The photos are nice and big and can be shared with the social networks. The AP also offers a good variety of local news sources, so you'll be able to get the stories that directly affect you.

8. Stumbleupon - Free
Stumbleupon for iPhone
While Stumbleupon isn't inherently a news based app, it provides a pretty nifty way of finding news for you - almost completely at random. While most other news apps present you with news in a very organized manner, you don't know what you will get with Stumbleupon. And you might come across a story or a topic that you are very interested in and didn't know it because the organized news apps won't have carried it.
9. Instapaper - $4.99 (approx. Rs. 267)
Instapaper for iPhone
Instapaper lets you save web pages for later offline reading. If you find a blog post or a news article that's extrememly long, and you don't have the time in the moment to finish reading, Instapaper will save the post or the article for you, so you can read when you can. The app will save pages as text only and attempts to provide you with a 'distraction-free' reading environment. More importantly, the articles you save to Instapaper will be available offline. You can also browse articles that your friends have posted to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr and see the Editor's Picks, which are articles that have been most saved by the Instapaper community.
10. Faking News - Free
Faking News for iPhone
A tribute to "Breaking news" in nomenclature, Faking News, the website providing Indian news satire is available for your iPhone. So when you need a break from the regular, serious headlines, kick back with headlines like "Rahul Gandhi trying to understand jokes around Rahul Dravid's retirement". We wanted to shout out to The Onion iOS app, but at the time of writing, it seems the app is down.
So there you have it. Your iPhone should now be well-equipped to keep you informed. And for the most part, at no cost to you at all.
